Fuel problems......among others

Fuel problems......among others
I've got a 98 4x4 Blazer with the vortec V6. I've been having problems with the fuel pressure bleeding off, making it hard to start when it would set for a few hours. Today I went out to start it, did my usual routine. Cycle the key 4 or 5 times and listen to the fuel pump whir and build pressure, try to start, maybe it works maybe I try again. Today I tried again. On the second round of the routine the fuel pump didn't whir at all. No attempt, no noise from it whatsoever. I let it set for 15 minutes or so andtried again with the same result. I'd like to check the fuse and relay for it before deciding to pull the pump. Since the pump Was working and stopped so suddenly I'm doubting it's the pump. My problem comes trying to locate the fuse and relay. Nothing seems to be marked and my Haynes manual has proved sufficientlyvagueonce again. Does anybody know the Exact location of these components? Any help would be appreciated.

You could try banging on the bottom of the tank. If that works, then your pump is indeed going bad.
The fuse and the relay are located in the engine compartment fuse box.
Here's a picture from the owner's manual for a 1998:
Fuel Pump relay boxed in red
Here's a pic of my fuse block with the Fuel Pump relay again boxed in red:
As for the fuse, the ECM B fuse is the only fuse for the fuel pump. It is the 20A fuse located directly to the left of the fuel pump relay in the picture above. Under the fuse box cover will be a diagram similar to the first picture I posted...
To check the relay, just pull out the horn relay and put the fuel pump relay in the horn location. If your horn sounds off when the horn button on the steering wheel is pressed, the relay is fine.

Outstanding. That's exactyly the info I needed. Thanks for the tip about hitting the tank and swapping fuses to test. I bought this thing used and it didn't come with an owners manual. I'll post again after I check it out.

No problem! I hope it is something as simple as a bad relay.

It's not the relay, not the fuse, and not the results I wanted. I didn't try to hit the tank yet because it's raining. Is there anything else that I might be missing here? I was looking online about a new pump and it's looking like $260 or more. Is that right? Kinda hard to believe.

I haven't tried it, but you may be able to reach up and remove the power wires from the pump. Check for power at the pump. If you have power there, then your pump is bad.
And yeah, sucks, but the price sounds about right... Only option for pulling the pump is to drop the tank.

Yeah, I know you have to drop it to change the pump. I guess my day is planned for me tomorrow. ; ) Thanks for the help.

[:'(] Yeah, that's about right for the price of the pump. I've changed several that intermittantly wouldn't run until you beat on the tank. Good news is it's not a bad job on that one. I just did one on my 99 and had it off in no time. Love those quick disconnects. Just watch for a small vacuum line on the front of the tank when you drop it. I couldn't see it until I dropped it and snapped it off. It wasn't on the pump, it was on the tank. Don't know if yours will have it or not but just thought I'd warn you anyway.

Yeah that is about the price for the fuel pump and new sending unit for fuel level...
