fuel pump question
new here, hey guys.
problem is fuel pump is bad, 51 psi, runs like shat.
anyways, i see at autozone, napa, and advanced, they want $250-300 for the full unit (pump and sending unit).
i just did mine on my 94 caprice, i just bought the pump for $100 and refurbished my sender to like new quality.
is this an option? where can i get just the pump? i have seen a few sites that are selling just the pump, but with the main auto stores only having the sending unit, it makles me think you cant just replace the pump, or it is pointless.
any suggestions? can i just buy the pump, and refurb my sending unit?
i need to know asap, this is my wifes car and she needs it to work, because she aint drivin my car!
sorry i almost forgot, its a 1999 4 door blazer 4.3L

More Information for PERFORMANCE ELECTRIC P988K
but it says its for a specific application.
(For use only with OEM fuel pump module assembly that contains a 1 1/2" diameter pump motor with 2 outlets (1-primary 3/8" outlet, 1-secondary 1/8" outlet). Instructions not included)
will it work for me? im unfamiliar with this car, we just got it handed down to us.
if this will work, id be VERY happy. it says no instructions, any write ups here for pump replacement, i searched and didnt find too much.
do i have a blazer or trailblazer? whats the difference?

If its a 99 chevy blazer like mine I would absolutely not do what you are planning to do. I know the cheaper ones seem like a good idea but these trucks, for some reason only mesh with the exact OEM replacement. I know that isn't what you want to hear but it is the truth. There is no point in replacing the sending unit and not the pump or vice versa. If you plan on keeping this truck then I HIGHLY recommend buying the OEM pump. I know times are tight and we are all looking to save money but you don't want to be dropping the tank and more money in six months because you didn't spend it up front. Any questions let us know. There are people here that know everything about these trucks. Good luck.
thanks for the reply, i should have mentioned, i only plan on having this thing for like 8-12 months. so im trying to go cheap as possible.
is it really that bad of an idea?
you say there is no point in replacing the pump without sending unit, why is that. i did it on my 94 chevy with no problems, the sending unit needs to be cleaned up but should be able to just replace the pump, no?
i might have to take my chances with the cheapie right now.
so what i need to know is, will the pump i linked to work for me, and is there right ups for the procedure?

I did my fuel pump and the sending unit and pump come as all one assembly. I don't believe you can seperate and/or buy the sending unit alone. The pump you show from rock auto is an aftermarket style pump. I don't think you could even make that work properly without throwing a bunch of EVAP codes. As far as keeping the truck for only a few months?? Up to you. You can search this forum for the fuel pump replacment procedure. There are tons of threads that outline it step by step.
Replacing just the pump can be done.
I've seen threads on the internet where people have used Bosch pumps (very good) and Walbro pumps (can't vouch for them). Search for Blazer Bosch pump relacement.
Most (including me) would not do it because of the pain it takes to remove the pump assembly to begin with. (I've done it 5 times on my '97 Blazer-it ain't fun).
Anyway, the problem I see is this: The pump sits in a plastic housing that insures the pump is always submerged in gas to keep it cool. There is an inlet at the bottom of the pump, that has a filter sock on it. This sock is on the bottom of the housing. The outlet of the pump is at the top, with a plastic hose that runs from the pump to the the top section of the spring loaded housintg. The hose is shrink-fit onto the housing and the pump for '97 and later Blazers. Earlier blazers had the tube zip-tied. In order to shrink the tube, you need a replacement (new) tube that you soak in very hot water, then force it on to the pump and housing fittings. Remember, this pump is capable of 90psi plus, so that shrink fitting better be good.
Good luck

im not sure i follow the problem you are speaking of, do you just mean the tube being fitted, or is it just a pain to put it back together because of the spring loaded housing?
no blazers at pick and pull anywhere close.
im probably just gonna junk it, not sell it, unless i can find someone to buy it, if i have to junk it no biggie, got it for free, thats why im trying to be cheap, it has had nothing but problems since day one (brand new).
so i dont want to sink money in and have something big go wrong, because that will result in being junked.
thanks for all the replies. i think im gonna get the complete spectra one from rockauto for $160 ish.
thanks for your time. its appreciated.
