Default Gas Tank Help

Ok, so, I've trolled the forums here a bit to read up on my plans, but some general maintenance and repair stuff needs to get done first.

The fuel pump in my 97 Jimmy 4dr 4wd died awhile ago. (yeah yeah, slow posting.) I removed the tank (after snapping both straps) and pulled the pump (and having the entire housing crumble in my hands). I had a friend use his parts account to grab me a new module assembly on the cheap (delco), while I grabbed a pump. The issue is, he bought a newer style module assembly that doesn't fit in the 97 metal tanks, which is kind of a good thing, because as I was waiting for the module, I looked into the tank a bit and noticed a LOT of loose rust, and some matching interior/exterior rust spots.

So, to be on the "cheap" side, could I get the newer style plastic tank to fit this module assembly and have it bolt up fine? Will this sender on the module work with the 97 fuel level buffer module? Or am I out some money and have to buy both an old metal tank and new housing for this pump?

Depends on how much newer it is. What year "module assembly" did you buy? The plastic tank will hold less fuel then the metal tank did.

I believe he said it's an 01 assembly. How much less? The metal was 18gal.

The plastic tanks are usually 1 gallon less. The tank and assembly may fit as long as it's the same body style. 4 door/2 door

1 gallon doesn't seem a huge deal to me. I get horrible mileage anyway unless it's highway.
