Default Gauges killing battery?

So my 2000 4x4 auto blazer is having a weird electrical issue (imagine that). The battery will not hold a charge for more than a few hours unless I put it on charge. I have had it tested and it tests good once I charge it. If I disconnect it it will stay charged. I noticed today that after I turn the car off and open the door all the gauges go to 0. But after about 10 seconds the gas, and engine temperature gauges will come back up. Is that normal? I think I would have noticed by now but maybe not. If I push the trip button with the key and the car off it will show me the mileage and all the gauges will drop back down to 0 but only for a few seconds. If any one has any ideas I would be grateful.

First thing that comes to mind for me is ignition switch!!! Have u ever replaced the failure prone switch???Btw, when I had my blazer the gauges all dropped down to zero......not to mention u couldn't check mileage at all, provided the key was out of the ignition.....

Pull one fuse at a time and check the voltage on the battery. This will find what the culprit is but then you will need to figure out why.

I ran an amperage test on the battery already and it is only showing a draw of about .02 amps between the positive terminal and the battery.

Something is still not correct as the gauges should all be off. I would still pull fuses to determine what circuit is pulling the 0.02 A. Likely the ignition switch as suggested above.

Where is the ignition switch plugged in? I might just unplug it and let is sit for a few days to see what happens.

Anything .05 amps and under is acceptable. If you're running tests by unplugging things put the instrument cluster on the list of suspects. Mine does nothing when I push the trip button with the key out.

I take that back. With the key out the odometer displays mileage when the trip button is pressed. When I ran out and pushed the button my negative battery cable was disconnected.

The ignition switch is attached to the steering column about midway between floor and steering wheel. Not the easiest thing to get to. YouTube has a nice video on replacing an S10 ignition switch.
