My 96 Blazer LT has a serious hard clunk when accelerating from a stop. It used to only do it when I really stepped on it. Now, even a nice easy start from a stop will cause it. It will do it when shifting from 1st to 2nd...auto trans. From what I've heard, it's one of very few 96's that is all time AWD. Transfer case fluid was black...that was changed a couple of weeks ago. What could be the cause?

 

Have you checked your motor and tranny mounts. This is my first thought.

 

If I get on the gas from a stop, it will be a continuous clunking from the front. If I REALLY take it easy, it won't do it...almost like the front tires are pulling harder than the back ones are pushing...

 

Does it do it when you shift into Reverse as well ?

If so, you probably have a bad Universal joint or (2).

 

I was going to suggest a bad u joint as well. How about a cv axle in the front? I'm still new to these vehicles, so, I'll try to post info I'm sure about. If I'm wrong, please, ignore it.

 

I've never really gunned it in reverse, so I don't know. But it doesn't seem to be a CV...not a continuous clicking like I've heard before on other vehicles. Makes no difference if the wheel is turned or not...U-joints seem to be solid. That's the first place looked.

 

Then I would look at the motor mounts. They may not be completely gone, but, they may be bad enough that the torque from accelerating from a stop may be causing the engine and or trans to move just enough to make that clunking noise you're hearing.

 

I'll have my mechanic look at that...could be a possibility, although the "clunks" can be several, as I accelerate. Any "mounts" would be a single "clunk". Aw, who the H know's...it's 15 years old. Never liked the AWD anyway, feels like a dawg.
