Default headlight question

alright, im not bad with cars, i just replaced the waterpump and vehicle speed sensor in my blazer last week.
But now my headlight is out on the drivers side. its raining outside right now, i dont have a garage to work on it in at the moment.
I gave it a quick look, and it looks like i have to rip out the air box and a whole bunch of stuff just to replace it. i dont feel like getting soaked because im replacing a damn lowbeam. is there a fast way im over looking? i do need to change it because i plan on making a trip tonight.

find the 2 tabs on the radiator support behind the headlight and pull them up. when you put it back...make sure the 2 tabs on the back of the headlight assembly are fitted into the slots on the support

Danny, that works for the '98+ trucks, but the earlier front ends on the 2nd gens were different. More like the 1st gens, but not identical in headlight mounting...

I'm trying to convince another member with a '96 to do a how-to on this because it has come up before. We'll get it sooner or later.. Sorry for any delay.

Kyle, would that '96 owner be me? If not, I'm willing to do it. As soon as I've gotten a couple of things, I intend to upgrade my front-end a little, which will involve replacing the headlights. I can post pix when I do it.

Jpap - you need to be more specific. Do you have the sealed beam headlights or the composite? It sounds like sealed beams, but you should say so anyway, just to be sure.

I also have the sealed beams. My Haynes manual (sucks, but it's better than nothing) says you have to remove the grille to get to the headlights, but that's not necessarily true. Last time I replaced a headlight, I just removed the screws in the front, then pulled the light out straight through the front of the grille. However, I dropped a screw into oblivion, which is probably why they didn't say to do it that way. So -- my suggestion is to use a magnetic screwdriver if you have one, or carry a few extra screws around. Short self-threaders from your parts store would probably be fine.

Raph

Wasn't you, but if you wouldn't mind, that would be great. We have had people ask about both the sealed beam and the composite headlights in the '95-'97.

Will definitely do that. I have the black grille, black/red bowtie, and euro clear corners now. On Tuesday I'm picking up the new conversion headlights and H4 bulbs. I also have LED bulbs for the front turn signals and clear corners.

I'm getting married this Saturday, so I will try to do the install one of these evenings after work, or first thing Sunday morning. I'll take pix as I go.

Just looking at the initial inspection of parts, I bet I can do it in less than two hours.

Well, my headlight conversion kit arrived today. I put all the pieces together in my basement as a preview, and even before it's on the truck, it looks tiiiiiiiiight.

So...if you have a '95-97 with sealed beams, don't fret. You CAN make your truck look hot without doing the full 98+ upgrade. I got my headlight conversion kit from JC Whitney. It's the one that has the halos! I also saw one other company that sold them, lightlens.com, but they looked kind of shady, so I didn't trust sending them my money.

And I will post pix of the install. The only problem is that I'm doing it today right after work, so I'm hoping I can finish before dusk.

I did realize that you had done that clear corners how-to, but it wasn't you that I was referring to. Said person hasn't been around much, but had been PM'ing me asking about how to get his composite headlights out. I walked him through what I would do for investigation and he finally got everything apart, but hasn't been back since.

But yeah, my post that you quoted above was a day after your clear corner how-to. Just coincidence that I had been speaking with someone else on the matter.
