help finding new motor
Hi everyone, ok I'm going to be buying a 95 4x4blazer with a blown motor. I was told by the guy that owns it, I'd have to find a 4.3 vortec that was a 95 or 96. I'm completly new to chevy's, I've always been a ford guy but this offer came along and it to good to pass up. Please educate thisnoobie lol. Thanks

Are you looking for new or used?

RE: help finding new motor
Personally if finances and time (not just the labor end but also if you can live with the truck being down while you do the work) allow it id rebuild the one that's in it, you know it fits and you'd know it will have a long life and treat you well as long as you keep up with the maintenance on it. Nothing like a fresh start for peace of mind

RE: help finding new motor
How much doesa rebuild cost compared to a used motor?Oh and there was some pretty big holes in the oil pan.
|
RE: help finding new motor
A typicallong block costs $1200 plustax from a rebuilder. That includesa $300core deposit. That will get you started. Whatever else you buy to go along with the engine will bedetermined by the size of your bank account.
You can usually find a used motor with no less than 160,000 miles on it for about $600 then you can rebuild that one for $1200 if it is rebuildable. |
RE: help finding new motor
It sounds like a rod or two has come from together. A rebuild may be out of the question.
A lower mile used replacement will be fine. |
RE: help finding new motor
So I can pick up any year 4.3 vortec fromthe junkyardand it will work? Also I was told the oil pans are different in the 4x2 than the 4x4 it this true?

RE: help finding new motor
There is a guy that sells used motors on ebay under the name s10 warehouse. He buys wrecked vehicles and pulls all the good parts. He has good motors with low miles, he is also pretty knowledgeable. I believe that he will ship anywhere too.

RE: help finding new motor
The oil pan and oil pump pick up tube and screen is completely different between the 2x4 and the 4x4 due to the clearance reqired for the front axle. A new1991-1998 4x4 oil pancosts $140.44 MSRP.
Oil pan, 4x4, GM- 12554259(use your old pan rail reinforcements) Melling 10990, high pressure HD oil pump (uses 3/4" pick-up tube/screen assy) Melling210S, 3/4" pick-up tube/screen assembly Melling IS-55E, all-steel oil pump drive shaftfor high pressure pump. |
RE: help finding new motor
It is just a crap shoot if you buy a used engine, no matter what the seller tells you. You may be buying some other persons headaches. It is better to buy a rebuilt engine from a reputable rebuilderunless you are trying togettheBlazer running just long enough tosell it.

RE: help finding new motor
Well I am just trying to get it running for the moment. It'll be a play toy I guess you'd say, I have a 92 explorer 2x4 and I'm tired of getting stuck lol. But that thing is my DD and I just need somthing better for mud. If the used motor doesend up being a lemon then I'll do the rebuild.I just need to know what year motor will drop right in now that I know a 2x4 will not thanks for that info Duntov.

RE: help finding new motor
If you can find a 95 engine that would be best(obviously). There are 'some' emmissions stuff on a 95 that are not on a 94 although to the naked eye these vortecs look the same from 92-95. 96 is COMPLETELY different. I'm not 100% sure a 94 wouldn't work but again...the evap stuff is there on a 95 and in 94 there wasn't much of it and how much work you'd have to do I'm not sure-that is if it can be done at all. Sure it can be but...get a 95. Thats my 2 cents worth! JP[:'(]

RE: help finding new motor
To be sure of interchange, only purchase a 1995 engine with the sam casting number as your old one. Two of the1993-1994block casting numbers that were also used in 1995 are 10227196 and 10235359. Even if you purchase a 1995 engine, with one of those two numbers, a mid-year change in 1995 can cause problems that involve the front timing chain cover. The 1992 through early 1995 engine used a tall metal timing cover with ten bolt holes and the late 1995 timing cover was a plastic timing cover with eight bolt holes. If the block has ten front cover holes, you can use either the 1992-early 1995 tin timing cover or the late 1995 plastic timing cover. Do not use the early 1995 tin timing coverwith the late 1995 block that used a plastic cover because it will leak oil. Some 1995 blocks are drilled and tapped for a knock sensor and some are not. Most rebuilders will drill and tapp both holes for knock sensors so the hole will be where it is needed. Seewww.blainesmotorsupply.com for engines.
