Default HOLE IN TRANNY!!

I have a 95 blazer and the tranny seemed to be acting up lately. And yesterday while I was driving the my blazer wouldnt get out of second gear and the rpms would just go up. Then i noticed smoke coming out from behind the blazer and the smell of tranny fluid. So i pull over and see tranny fluid pouring out from under the car. I take it into Mr. Lube which was right beside where i pulled over and I had a hole in my tranny. So i got it towed to a tranny shop and is waiting for a reply from the guy. Does anyone know how this could have happened and if it is even worth replacing as the truck has 260,000 kms on it? And could there have been any other damage done?

Thanks in advance.
