Ignition cylinder removal?

Ignition cylinder removal?
Doing a ignition switch removal. No one ever talks about removing the ignition cylinder to remove the top cover. Always talk about cutting a slit in the cover. Is there a reason for not just pulling the cylinder out and emlininate the cut in the cover? At that point soon. Thanks.
