Default Key Stuck

I have a 2002 ZR2 auto and the key will shut the engine off but it won't turn and come out. There is a hole in the steering column that if I stick a pen up in it then the key releases.

Is there a missing button that goes in that hole? I've also been told that there was a cable that ran to the transmission shifter that can be adjusted to release the key - (couldn't find it) and that there is an electrical solinoid on the column that releases the key - (haven't looked yet) Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same for my blazer, the button is gone. Now its done so that its in "pressed in" mode all the time i guess the cables are connected so that it the key will always come out.

no ide if that helped.

Check your reverse lights fuse. If blown the key will not turn back far enough to release it. button on shifter will not push either.

Will do. The button on the shifter seems to work but I'll look into the reverse light fuse too. Thanks.

OK, I checked the reverse lights and they are working fine, but the key still gets stuck.

Do you have any check engine lights? Mine was doing this a few weeks ago, I replaced the ignition switch, runs from the ignition down the column and under the dash, easy fix, the part is about $100, I went to the junkyard and found 1, paid $8 for it, replaced and good to go.

No, there are no check engine lights. By ignition switch do you mean some switch lower on the column or where the key goes in? I've fixed every thing else on this rig and it's good to go as soon as I get this stuck key problem resolved. Thanks for the response.

It attaches to where the key goes in, if you pull your plastics off around the column, look at where the key goes in and you will see a little black box looking thing, its that, but there's wires that run down the column to right above the pedals, push ur key in a few times, almost bang on it and see if it will come out, I went a week having this issue, but if I hit the key in every time it would come out

I had this problem years ago..In fact, it is what brought me to this forum....My 01 Extreme had the key stuck in it...Turns out it was this anti theft lock deterrent thing....I removed this white plastic piece and have not had one problem with the key since....
