Default Is mechanic charging too much???

I have asked this mechanic to help me out with a dilemma I am having with a new to me used 1999 Blazer LS that I purchased on March 17 2014 from a dealer. And yes I have been taken for a ride.

It needs the following repairs:

Lower intake manifold gasket (felpro)
thermostat replaced
flush job
oil change
heater blower motor replaced (he is putting in a used one)
spare tire carrier changed out and spare tire mounted
new battery tray

I am supplying the prestone, the oil and the spare tire and tire carrier.
His estimate for the whole job is $898.00

Does that sound a bit high to ya'll?

I wish I was 20 years younger and healthy again, I would do the work myself, or that I could find someone else around here to do it for less.

depends on where you are located but if this was around me I would do this job for about $550 for everything you listed.

It was $500 just for my intake gaskets so depending on where you live, with all of that other stuff, that sounds about right. At $50 in labor per hour, it adds up quick. I had my my mechanic break down what he is charging for each repair, so I had an idea what it would cost for each repair. I would see if yours will do the same.

In Ontario, Canada, I was quoted $2000 for the LIM Gaskets.
You should do it yourself. It took me a weekend to do it, and there are quite a few writeups on the interweb about it.
That's just my two (Canadian) cents.

Default I wish I were down by you too.....SC

I am actually looking into re-locating to SC because that is where my family is at, but for now I am stuck here in Upper Mich.
And we just got 6 inches of snow last night bah!

I wish I could do the work myself. I use to work on my own vehicles. I grew up around mechanics, my dad, brother, brother-in laws, and boyfriends were all mechanics, and I rebuilt a 350 in my old 1960 Chevy pu back in the day. Took out the 283 and put in a 350 so it would have more power to haul a horse trailer. Unfortunately I am now disabled and can no longer do things of that nature and have to rely on others

Im sorry to hear that.
Well as other suggested i would shop around abit, however as I said, in ontario i was quoted $2000 for just the LIM gaskets, so to me, for all the work you are getting done, its a good deal

Wow. Here in lower michigan it was $50-$75, (from the quotes that I got) but only $50 where I had it done.

yea i paid 550 for just the lower intake gaskets, with felpro, that doesnt sound outrageous, and my old mechanic was expenisive.

i mean for parts and labor its not out of the ball park . if im not mistake the LIM takes 5.7hr....so my mechanic said lol
