I have cut up the air box and removed the screen on every 1996 and newer vortec that I have ever owned (5) without a problem. The screen isa restriction, there is no advantage to keeping it other than noise cancelation (although it does protect the delicate MAF sensors). I know that the engineers at GM have gone back and forth on this one for awhile now, the new trucks no longer have these screens.
I personally scanned my vehicle with and without the screen and saw the data, but what is data anyway? Maybe my truck was off on its own little world when I did that test. Oh and maybe those over in the 3800 community have it all wrong as well when they did this exact test. Take it for what it is worth.

I would love to hear how much you have gained by removing this "restriction". You do realize that the screen is in an area that is quite a bit larger than the throat of the sensor and that the flow area removed by the screen is less than the reduction in flow area due to the smaller diameter, right..?... But I digress, you will never see anything different as you have never had any "problems" on EVERY 1996 and newer vortec you have ever owned...[&o]
