I have the following symptoms on a 2000 blazer 4 door 2wd: The engine will not shut off when I remove the key but the control panel turns off; I see white smoke coming from the steering column next to the e-light **** (when the engine is running w/o the key); when the everything is off and I press the brake pedal, then the fuel pump pressurizes, the check engine soon light and chime sound come on; the right turning signal stays on when activated. I changed the iginition switch but the problems persists. Next, I want to replace the multifunction switch but I am not sure. Has anyone had similar symptoms and what did you do to repair the problem?

Smoke is never a good thing. I would recommend you drop the steering column down and check all of the wires that run up there. If allowed to go unchecked, you may end up with an air bag in the face or worse, a fire in the dash. I'm betting that at some point someone had dropped the column or done work on the dash and pinched some wires. That should not be happening and the multifunction switch has nothing to do with the ignition switch or keeping the engine running. Sounds very much like wires are crossed in the steering column wiring harness.

Thank you for your response. I am not driving the vehicle because of the smoke. It has been parked for several days. The problem abruptly appeared last Saturday and I am certain that nobody has been under the dash since everything looked tidy and clean under it. So you don't think all these symptoms are related? You think I have different problems?
