Did you inspect all the fuses or use a test light? Maybe pinched a wire when putting the CD player in?

I think replacing the cluster before doing more tests was a little hasty. I'll admit a little stupidity here...I thought something was wrong with my gauges..then I rotated the dimmer wheel on the panel.

I would have definitely done some more testing. It's possible that the cluster is ok and that the ignition switch has started to fail.

I'm currently having the same problem.
I know you're always supposed to take off the negative battery cable when doing electrical work, but I was at school at the time with limited tools, bad weather, and I got lazy. I was installing a new stereo also. When I plugged in the wiring harnesses, things flickered, snapped, crackled, and popped until 2 of my fuses blew. If I remember correctly one was for the radio and the other was for the dash/illumination or something. Also, I had known at the time that it was about time to replace my battery.
What I didn't realize is that I was in the car with the dome light on for way too long, and when I went to start the car when I squared everything away, the battery didn't have the power. I got a jump the following day and started the car, but then an hour later the battery was totally dead. I replaced the battery, replaced the fuses, and now I've got illumination, radio is working, and the tach, speed, and volts gauges are working, but the fuel and temp gauges are not. In fact, the low fuel light is constantly on.
Any suggestions? I'm going to try and take a closer look at it tomorrow.

i would replace the fuses. even though they might not look bad i have seen corrosion on the blades and cause a bad connection.
