the mystery stall and sputter
1997 jimmy 4x4 4dr
hey guys, have an issue that i haven't been able to pinpoint in the past couple weeks. i noticed that when i go on long drives especially with a trailer hooked up my blazer will sometimes just sputter and then die randomly after I've been driving and its up to temperature for an extended period of time. especially going up the mountains and what not in Colorado usually just towing a single place trailer with snowmobile on it.. its especially a problem on warmer days.
one day I thought it was a gas issue, added gas to the tank, seemed to disappear for the rest of the drive. however, I had it idling in the garage and I jumped on the bumper and bounced the truck back and forth around a little bit and it stalled, also sometimes when i take a turn out of a parking lot and go over a curb it will stall.
was thinking maybe a fuel line has a small small leak in it and when it gets hot enough for the metal line to expand or flexes or moves in the right position it pushes out fuel and loses rail pressure.. but that wouldn't explain why it runs perfectly fine otherwise as soon as i start it back up..
OR a short in wiring somewhere to something either fuel or ignition related.
i can usually turn the ignition off, turn the key to on position and off position about a couple times and it will start right up and go again until this mystery problem decides to appear again randomly.
thoughts anyone?
also might be helpful to note I have a "P1133" code being thrown for bank 1 O2 sensor. I have the sensor, going to replace it tomorrow and see if the code goes away and then see if it does the stalling and sputtering next time i tow again. if not then check all vacuum lines over meticulously and replace a fuel line filter that looks jenky and really really old and probably check the wiring to fuel pump and grounds to fuel pump and what not.

was replacing the shocks today and noticed the fuel tank filler didn't have a hose clamp on the connecting rubber and there was fuel leaking. added one. the check engine light went off when i started it after putting one on.
will see if it has any effect on the stalling. im doubtfull though.

alright, ended up replacing all the o2 sensors after they each failed one week after another and havent had a check engine light or any issues with stalling and get 14mpg now. also replaced ignition coil.
After going on a 750 mile trip in southern colorado, 2 mountain passes, dozens of stream crossings and trails at the great Sand dunes park, getting stuck, and quite a few tanks of gas, the stalling returned on my way back home after 2hrs of continuous driving at 75mph it started happening again about 10 times. So i am going to pull the fuel tank and replace the pump, check connections, replace filter and check the tank and fuel screen for debris.
SOLVED:
problem was the new airtex fuel pump that previous owner had installed before selling vehicle. intermittently failing whenever it got too warm and under too much of load, at under half tank especially more noticeable.

Sometimes you have to go through a bunch of parts that need to be replaced anyway to get to the one that is actually causing the problem.
And yes, ordered an ac-delco this afternoon so will be dropping the tank again in the near future for it.
