The other day I was driving down the highway and I realized that my AC was no longer blowing cold air. So I turned the AC off for a minute or two and turned it back on and it was cold again. It hasn't done it since but I noticed that my AC clutch will randomly dis engage for a few seconds and turn back on, but it has always been cold for the past few weeks. Is there something that I should look into or is it normal for the clutch to disengage like that?

 

It still blows out the vents, just not cold, correct?


It's normal for the clutch to cycle, except in high ambient temps, (95F+) with high humidity.


It's possible that it's over or under charged with refrigerant and or oil, or there might be another problem in the system, (clogged or torn orifice tube, compressor issue, etc). The best place to start, is to make sure it's properly charged. Unfortunately, the only way to know how much refrigerant is in the system, is to drain, evacuate for a minimum of one hour, and recharge with the proper amount of refrigerant.

 

Okay, I will have a shop check it out when I go for inspection.
