No, 89 is a 700r4. 96 is a 4l60e. Would be a major pain, It will bolt up but you will have shift and all other sorts of issues.

id get a 4l60e from a yard possibly. getting that one rebuilt is gonna run you 1500-2500$ easy.

its a pain in the but to remove/reinstall, but doing that part yourself can save you ~300$ or so. hope it helps!

That depends on what your 89 had originally. If it had the 4.3L, then any 4.3L will bolt in (along with any GM v8 for that matter).

It will be a MAJOR pain to get a complete 97 engine to work in your truck though. Your best bet would be to use the short block, using your heads on up. And even then, I am sure you will have to customize some things due to the changes in the block between those years.

The design of the engine has changed a LOT since the TBI motor you have in your truck. Search for "Andersen" and you should turn up an article entitled "Rebuilding the 262" that will go over the changes from the TBI motor to the CPI motor. More changes happened in '96 with the SCFI motor.
