Newbie just got code PO 440
I just bought a '97 Blazer with 176K miles and just got an SES message. I had auto zone hook up their scanner. Code PO 440 came up. I know it has something to do with the evap. emissions control. I checked the hoses as best I could and found no problems however, I couldn't locate the purge solenoid. The truck runs fine otherwise. I disconnected the battery for about 10 minutes and the SES message is gone. Also, how long after I "reset" the code by disconnecting/re-connecting the battery will it return?
Looks like a great forum. All help is appreciated.
Thanks

The purge solenoid is on the engine on the passenger side of the upper plenum in front of the distributor. It will be bolted down to the lower intake and have an electrical connector on the top and a vacuum line connection (clipped on) on the passenger side of it. The vent solenoid is located on a crossmember under the truck. Its location depends on whether you have a 2dr or a 4dr. If you have a 4dr, then it is on the crossmember directly behind the rear axle and it is located in the middle. The spare tire will have to be dropped to get access to it.
1st thing to check though is to tighten your gas cap until you hear atleast 3 clicks. Have you recently filled with fuel? It typically takes a day or two (depending on number of key on-off cycles) to set a P0440 code.

Thanks Swartlkk. Before I got the light, I had been working on the spare tire and raised it to its stow postion. I never looked to see exactly where the spare finally seated under the truck. Maybe I bumped the valve under there. I'll check it out tomorrow.
