Default no fire to plugs

Have a 4dr 97 4x4 automatic that will only turn but not start. I disconnected the central plug wire from the coil to check for spark but it only sparks when the key is turned back to off position after trying to crank it up. I bought this truck and had to put in a fuel pump but there was a wire spliced on the pump harness that leads to nowhere. The wire is purple and had another wire attached by previous owner but it just runs through the floor board and connects to nothing. I left it alone since it ran strong before but i hate doing that. Rather find the right wiring route.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Purple wire? I THINK thats for the fuel gauge. does your gauge work? if it does then im not sure.

Id replace the ignition pickup in the distributor if your not getting a good spark at the coil. If thats not it,then have the coil tested,if it tests fine then another thing it could be is the ignition control module under the dis cap. Make sure your rotors in good shape too.

Thanks I was thinking gauge too. No it does not work. I have found that distributors are a common problem with these engines so that and the crank sensor are on the "to-do". My pump stop making that sound when the key is turned so I am hoping this all ties in together. Thanks again. Oh yeah the ICM was tested and came out good.

Yea purple is for the sending unit. If you want to spend the money and replace the whole distributor, then you can get it at advance auto for about 60.00 new if you use the coupon code visa or big35 on your order online. Its 30.00 off 75.00 purchase. Do it all the time! i love it.

If the pump is not turning on,and the power wiring isnt hacked, check the relay before changing the pump

OK at least now I know where the wire leads. Now to figure out why someone would splice it and run it separately. Good lookin' out on the online code, need all my pennies! Funny thing about that pump relay, it seems to be in two different places on certain models. Checking both to be sure.

Distributor was fine. Turned out the PCM was bad. Grabbed one from the junkyard for like $25 and had truck towed to dealer for another $85 then paid dealer $110 to reprogram computer to my truck. $220 aspirin and well worth the relief!! Scan tool couldn't get a read from computer and that was the diagnosis.
