Default This is odd... Right front axle howling

Right front axle howling In this 95 blazer with the push button four-wheel-drive if I engage the front axle by hitting 4 high the noise goes away but it starts howling again as soon as I take it out of four-wheel-drive. So anybody have any ideas?

Possibly the axle disconnect not disengaging completely? Does it sound sort of like gears grinding? Otherwise, I would say it's something in the differential itself, like the spider gears. But the differential isn't on the right.

It actually sounds like gears working together not grinding there’s a loudish speed related gear sound but as soon as you hit the four-wheel-drive high button the sound goes away so you’re thinking that the right axle side is not disengaging properly from the center section or do they disengage at the hub? Or is it a simple disengagement at the transfer case? I’m not really keen on these blazers

It's actually a 2-piece axle with a coupler in the middle. It sounds like that coupler might not be completely disengaging, so the teeth are grinding against each other. When you switch to 4WD, the coupler engages, so no noise.

OK excellent I did not know there was a coupler in that front end.
