the 3387A is 3.36" tall, & for the 2WD trucks. the 3980 is 4.94" tall, & for a 4x4. so yes there is more area for filtration, but since i've always used the PH3980 on all my trucks-2WD or 4x4.
it won't hurt any by having the 3980 in there. nor will it by using the recommended one either. and i only use Fram (that's why i have the "PH" in there).
