I tried to use the same shims, but just would not go in, so I reused the right side shim, then put in a stack which gave me a backlash of 0.009...which I thought was good.

According to some info I found, I thought the backlash range was 0.006 - 0.010....but that was for the older style 5-cut ring gear...which I believe I have the 2-cut ring gear so the backlash range is tighter at 0.003 - 0.006. Which makes my original measurement of 0.0085 to be out of spec....makes sense with 167k miles of wear.

Thank you for the bearing numbers.....have found them using those numbers.....
I would set it up to whatever you measured for original backlash if it was quiet. I think 0.0085 and 0.0090 are the same. Shoot for 0.004 preload ( 0.002 shim interference on each side) for the new carrier bearings. Don't try to pound the shims in with carrier and races in place. Set up the carrier with races and install the carrier/races with shims in place (except for one thick one next to each race leave angled out enough to get race started past it). Then take a heavy dead blow hammer to the carrier itself. Takes a couple extra hands to get started holding everything in place but works really well.

Yeah I found that trying to tap the shim into place with the carrier/races already in place, just does not work. For now I put the open-diff back in; carrier bearings are shipping today, but need to have my Blazer back on the road again. Once I get the new bearings pressed onto the limited-slip diff, then I can try again. Will only cost me a cover gasket....which I forgot to order with the bearings...crap!!

Got it...factory G80....I was remembering the G80 differently for some reason. What ratio is it? Just curious.

Just wondering what gear ratios are available for this rear end - slightly off topic but I figured you have done a little research so i was going to cheat off of your paper :-)

3.73...that is what my Blazer has.

tmlittle:...are you asking what is available now or what was available? I think there were three ratios available when new. What is available now, I have not looked, as I was staying with the 3.73.

Yes I was wondering what is available today. I have a a fun healthy LT1 in a 1st gen connected to a 700r4 trans that has a healthy overdrive. So for fun at the strip I wanted to know if a 4.10 existed

A quick search showed this:

Motive Gear Performance Ring and Pinion Sets G875410

which is a 4.10 ratio.

After going through my unsuccessful diff change-out, I really got to thinking about why in the world would GM/Chevrolet EVER sell a 4wd Blazer with an open-diff....why? Why was the G80 not a required option in all 4wd Blazers? So guys help me understand this. Yes I know an open-diff is cheaper...but really, is this the reason?

Now since I have never driven my Blazer in snow....does having two open-diffs, when in 4wd, work in snow or loose sand?

Will rear tire scuffing be a problem when I get the limited slip installed?
