Default p0440 and gas smell

I got my check engine light going and the code was p0440.

My canister had one of the hoses cracked and I put some epoxy on it but whenever I turn off the car I still smell gas and I tried to narrow it down and found out that it was coming from above the canister where the hoses go to the fuel tank. On the side of the fuel tank I can also see gasoline stains.

My mechanic suggested that I get a new charcoal canister but I'm kind of skeptical due to the fact that they are stains on the fuel tank itself. Any clues or advice on what I should do?

i would check the tank and the hoses going into it as well as the canister and hoses,
perhaps after driving it touch the suspected ares for dampness

The problem ended up being the O ring on the gas tank which was leaking.
