Hello, I recently purchased a used Blazer, a 2000. During the test drive, everything worked fine, it started right up, everything. I drove it home, used it that day, etc. The guy I bought it from said the gas gauge "wiggled" a little at around a quarter of a tank (I know now this is a very big understatement). The next morning, I went to register it and the Blazer wouldn't start. My boyfriend jumped it and it started right up. It was fine for a few days, except that when the gas reached about a quarter of a tank, I saw what he meant. The thing is wacko! the needle flies all over the place, and its very aggrivating. Unless my tank is over half full, I have no clue how much gas I have until the light comes on. After a few days, the thing died again. But I hit the button on my key to pop the trunk which left the door open, and jumped it again, just thinking, okay the battery is probably just getting old and I need to stop sitting on my keys. Since then, it has died a few times and needed to be jumpd. Yesterday, it died after I shut if off and listened to the radio while my boyfriend was in the store for about five minutes. It did not start again, and I had to have it towed home, even after he brought his own car and tried to jump it. We've tried to jump it a few times since then and nothing. He and a friend after examining the best they can without proffesional tools or diagnostics, agree it must be the fuel pump. My questions are, would this have anything to do with the battery dyin, or is that just an unfortunate side problem. Also, where exactly is the fuel pump located and how difficult is it to replace? And also, would this be related to the gas guage acting so crazy, and is there ANY other things we should check first, before comitting to this? I have neither the time nor the money to have this thing in the shop, and quite frankly, am a little pissed that I just got the damn thing and its already dead. Please, if anyone can give me any ideas, that would be great.

Fuel pump is inside the tank. The pump and level sensor are all one piece. It's a DIY job,if you are handy.Use AC Delco parts. The battery issue probably isn't directly related to the pump, but there is only so much cranking power available.Your Blazer should start right up with minimal cranking.

Best to check fuel pressure and leakdown first, rather than just replacing the pump, (It's a rather expensive repair). Key ON, engine OFF, fuel pump running: Pressure must be 60psi to 66psi and must remain above 55psi for at least 10 minutes after the pump shuts off. If it fails either part of the test, it means there is a problem with the fuel delivery system and further testing is necessary to pinpoint the problem. Most auto parts stores rent/sell/loan fuel pressure testers. The test takes ~15 minutes. If it does end up needing a fuel pump, as mentioned above, use AC Delco ONLY!

Poertsch, If you have a 4.3L V6 engine, the service port for checking fuel pressure is located to the left side of the distributor, it might have a black plastic cap on it. The procedure and specifications are in post #4.

Here is what it looks like: Actron Fuel Pressure Testers CP7818 - SummitRacing.com
Ignition ON, engine OFF, fuel pump activated: 413kpa to 455kpa
Pressure must remain above 379kpa for at least 10 minutes after the fuel pump is deactivated.
If it fails one or both tests, there is a problem, and further testing is required to locate the problem.
