I have a '99 4 door lx. The check engine light has been on for about a month with the po440 evap code. It died on me the other day at a stoplight and wont start back up. I can hear the fuel pump start to prime and truck is trying to turn over. Would the evap sensors actually stop the car from running or should i look for another problem? The po440 is still the only code that pops up.

 

Test the fuel pressure. Just because you can hear the pump, that doesn't mean that it is providing the proper pressure for the engine. Check out the 2nd Gen Fuel System Diagnosis thread for the fuel pressure test procedure.

I doubt the P0440 code is causing your starting troubles.

Thanks. The evap emissions sounded like an easier fix so i was hoping it would just be that. But Ill get the fuel systems checked.
