On that note, why do you think its giving me the resistance? Logically heres what I've came up with: 1) Blaze was stuck in 4lo ( for sure) when I took the encoder motor off. 2) Trying to turn the shaft ( on transfer case that connected to Eco. Mot.) only could turn it one way (easily) and it clicked once. Drove the blaze in that condition and was much better, but again seemed to be in 4hi due to hitting 40mph and acting funny. How could I get it to 2hi if the transfer case doesnt intially want to turn?? |
Get the whole vehicle up on jack stands. With the transmission in neutral, try turning the rear driveshaft while you attempt to manually shift the transfer case.

What is jacking the blazer up and turning the rear drive shaft and messing with the TC do?

This changes the orientation of the gears in the transfer case that handle the range shift. Something to try.

My 98 blazer was stuck in 4-lo once. I think the transfer case was bound up, I tapped it with a hammer gently and it shifted back into 2-lo when I hit the button. Something simple to try.

Replacing encoder motor...

Not sure if anyone remembers me, the other week I was posting about 99 blazer being stuck in 4lo. Well, I've got it in 4 hi now. I've heard that you sometimes need to rock the blazer to get it to pop back into 2hi. Well since I've got the enocoder motor off ( pretty sure its bad, has brown stuff around white female end) I can't rock the blazer without being underneath it. I'm going to try and deal with that this weekend. QUESTION: I just spoke with a mechanic about the encoder motor. I told him that I thought the Transfer Case needed to be in neutral to be replaced, since the motor comes in neutral. HE SAYS...that his repair manual online ( All data or something like that) doesnt mention the transfer case being in neutral. He told me that I should be able to just buy a new encoder motor, turn it so it fits on the transfer case and my problem should be solved... Any opinions about this? Thanks, -HP |
This depends on what transfer case you have. The NV233 encoder motor (3-button switch) can be turned while disconnected. The NV236 encoder motor (4-button switch) has a shift lock to hold a certain engagement on the front output shaft because it is a fully automatic transfer case (much like the NV136 AWD transfer case) when in Auto4wd mode. Because of this, you cannot move the shift motor without energizing the shift lock circuit.

Before you go and spend the $900-$1000 on a new encoder motor, are you sure it's bad, or is it just the connectors that are corroded? If it's just the connectors you should be able to get it re-pinned for a hell of a lot less then a whole new encoder motor. That's currently what I'm in the process of doing now...hope to have my encoder motor back in this weekend with the new pins. I'm hoping that it will work *fingers crossed*
