This depends on what transfer case you have. The NV233 encoder motor (3-button switch) can be turned while disconnected. The NV236 encoder motor (4-button switch) has a shift lock to hold a certain engagement on the front output shaft because it is a fully automatic transfer case (much like the NV136 AWD transfer case) when in Auto4wd mode. Because of this, you cannot move the shift motor without energizing the shift lock circuit.

Alright. With that being said: Can I connect the electrical components and leave the Encoder motor off and try to swtich it to the desired location ( 4 hi or 4 lo...cant get it anywhere else) then install the encoder motor?

FYI- I've got the 4 buttton.

Thanks again,

You can manually turn the shift sector shaft in the transfer case with an open end wrench to match it up with the replacement encoder motor.

I'm not gonna title this 4WD!!!

Ahh another 4wd question, lets compile them all and put it in a book..

So, back story. Blaze has been stuck in 4lo. Took encoder motor off, looks like it was corroded. Could switch transfer case manually, but not to 2HI, only 4hi, 4lo, and neutral.

Called a mechanic to see if he could put it in 2hi then I would replace the encoder mother ( I can order it online for 150, shop is tryin to charge 5-640$$ RIDICULOUS!)...

Mechanic says, and I quote, " There is NO WAY to get it into 2hi without replacing the encoder motor".....

After reading over this forum for the past few months...I've never heard such tale.

Any truth behind this? Any ideas how to get the truck to 2lo. Seems like it goes through the gears find, just won't pop into 2hi..

At least I'm getting great gas mileage, hasnt left the garage in 2 months.

Vehicle info? Transfer case info?

Nothing should be prohibiting you from manually putting the transfer case into 2HI with the encoder motor off. You may have to rotate the driveshafts as you try to complete the shift if you are moving through the ranges (LO to HI).

1999 blazer. 4 push-button ( AWD)....

If I jack it up, have someone turn the wheels while I'm trying to shift the TC manually...that should pop it into 2hi?

It should. Unless there are problems internal to the transfer case...

Any help, small or big...NEEDED

Here’s the situation: I’ve got a 4wd 99 chevy blazer, 4 button transfer case. I got it stuck in 4lo a while back. Took the Encoder motor off to manually shift the TC into 2HI. Can’t do it.

I’ve found all the gears ( 4hi, 4lo, and Neutral) but those are the only three slots I can find. I’ve checked EVERYTHING it seems like. Plenty of fluid, all the hoses match up…I even jacked up the blasted blaze and turned the wheels while trying to shift in 2hi, but I get no results.

Any ideas at all??
