radiator core sizes
just replaced radiator on 95 blzer. ordered it, here the next day deal,so i could replace it over weekend. did on friday night no problems, except when i opened box it was 1 inch instead of a 1 1/4" which was the size of the one that was in there. called store they said it metoem standards also made them in 7/8 which my 2001 has. just by looking at them you can tell they have more fins/inch. does that make up for width. [and total coolant capacity]seems to run a bit cooler but can't wait for that 1st warm day with 90 degrees and a/c running!! also just a note I had put on an add on transmission cooler on there left off this time because of all the dirt incondenser [in between add on tranny coolerand condenser]felt that wasn't gaining me anything so just rehooked the lines to radiator. so if you dont want to worry about width versus more fins make sure you check core size before ordering [which i didnt do] or trust in more fins? let you know how it does when it's90 degrees out there! after checking you can still get the larger width dont know how many fins per inch wider ones have compared to the narrower widths? and then theres the whole towing thing!!
I looked in my radiator replacement book and it shows the core thickness to be 1 3/8" thick on a '95. These radiators for late model vehicles are what is known as a "single row" meaning they have a single tube line running through the core, so the overall thickness of the core would not have much of an effect on the cooling process. The old cars and trucks had as many as "four row" radiators.The rad manufacturers say that a large single tube or row is more efficient than three or four small tubes and also less likely to spring an internal leak. I believe the real reason for getting away from a multi row rad is the cost.
You said you did not re-install the tranny cooler; do you tow anything or routinely carry a load or a lot of people? If so, you may want to re-think about the cooler because trans shops don't bat an eye telling you $1000.00-1500.00 for a rebuld and install.

thanks for checking on that for me. wonder why they would sell 1" and 7/8" for 95's then and why are 2001 has only 7/8?
unless with more cooling fins between the rows they offer same cooling as larger ones? I'm sure it has nothing to do with cost ha! ha! as far as add on tranny cooler i would run hot with the dirt in condensor and felt that is just as hard on your tranny and engine if your sneaking up to 215 or so? want to see what will happen with clean condensor this summer. with the amount of dirt that was between cooler and condensor i feel thats a pretty good portion of air tha'ts not getting moved then!! and if your temp is 215 then tranny and engine are those temps. it's like my own experiment see how it does 1st with the factory lines going to radiator and 1" radiator. if it don't work i will add cooler again. like I said didnt check core size 1st and there in lies the problem.
