Recommendations-Tranny bit the dust

So, I'm sort of battling w/the old lady as far as what to do. I want to get the tranny rebuilt, she wants something else but doesn't seem to understand unless you want to pay waayyy more you're getting something with probably the same mileage and no guarantees whatsoever. I know once the tranny is GTG the car will be GTG (just passed inspection). This car is only a backup which sees at best 1k miles a year.

So I'm curious if anyone has bought a tranny rebuilt and had a local shop do the R & R. I see a place on ebay that sells for under 1k including shipping, core. What's the book labor time on R & R? And are local mechanics typically cool with that job?

I was quoted 1800 for the whole rebuilding plus R&R from a trans shop, but if I could get that down it'll help sell to the old lady.

Problem with ebay trans is two fold. Shipping and core nearly equal what R&R would be locally and you really don't know what you are getting. Warranties are usually worthless because of R&R costs and shipping, again.
Trick is to find a local shop that builds good transmissions. Not just something like Aamco that just throws cheap parts in one. A good shop will do all needed upgrades. Between the time your vehicle was built and now builders and engineers have identified and cured numerous issues. ATSG has a book out for the 4L60E which is just upgrades available and it's out of date. A good trans shop will know which are applicable for your transmission and which ones work.
Surprisingly in some locales Craigslist is a good place to look. Don't look for the cheapest. Look for the one that specializes in 4L60E's and talks about the upgrades. Not heavy sun shells and super clutches. Actual upgrades. Some of these places will do the R&R and it's also covered by the warranty. No shipping or core issues either.
$1500 complete is a good price. Trans, torque converter, fluid, and R&R. $1800 isn't bad if it's a well built trans with a decent warranty.
Ignore that red link. The website automatically added it and it's not something I'd pay any attention to.

I also agree buying someone else's problems is not a cure. You know what you have.

Thanks, I'm in eastern WV by I-81. They have rebuilts on Craigslist? I've only seen used on there which I'm not interested in.
