why do you think the EGR valve? It really could be a million things.

cause it only happens when cold. and once its ranf ro a few seconds and the egr valve has had a chance to unstick itself it runs fine

pull the egr valve out and clean real good with carb cleaner and then install new gasket with the screan in it to keep particles of carbon from jamming the egr valve open.

running hot doesnt sound good, mine did the same thing and i found out the head was cracked.you could try to pressure test the cooling system that should tell you if the head is cracked.i would also run a compression check on the cylinders.
