Default rubber? bumper cover removal

has anyone yanked the plastic cover off of front bumper? My blazer had a snow plow on it for about 6 mos. so the plastic cover underneath is not there, is it necessary? i put a aluminun mud flap over the gap in bumper and attatched my lic plate to it, ideas?

The bumper will probably last longer in IL w/o the rub strip. No place for the salt to hide. It's when it gets in the nooks and crannies that it does the most damage.
The opposite is true for the lower deflector. It prevents a lot of salt spray from getting up under the engine. Things like front brake lines can use all the protection they can get.
