I have a 99 Blazer with a V6. Over the past two weeks I have had to add about 2 gallons of coolant so far. I can't find any leaks or puddles or see any grey smoke. When I open the hood, I have a strong smell of antifreeze.
Any ideas as to what it might be? I could sure use the help.
Thanks

I have a 99 as well. My water pump went at 97K miles. I could just maintain temp on the freeway, but as soon as I would stop at a light, I'd boil. I got that fixed, but yeah, I have the same smell at times. I'd like to figure out where it's coming from.

check under the water pump for leaks... have you changed your intake manifold gaskets? check just behind your AC compressor for antifreeze.... if there's some there it's probably the gaskets.... do you smell any antifreeze when you run your heater? check the plastic end caps of the radiator also... could be cracked

check the valley between the valve covers and intake, thats were mine were leaking from. i had the strong smell and never any puddles....two gallons seems like you have a major problem though.

also check your spark plugs for signs of it burning off.

or you could try that uv light kit for finding leaks...

If you can smell it and youve lost two gallons thats quite a leak. The motor is known for intake leaks. Usually leaks out one of the four corners of the lower intake were it meets the heads. If your lucky it leaks out. If your unlucky its leaks into your oil and blows your motor bearings. You may be sucking into the motor intakes as well which should show up as some smoke. Have you got under the car to see if anything is running down the motor? Nothing on the ground?

Do an oil change and look to see if there is coolant in the oil.

Rent a cooling system pressure checker gizmo (Yes, that is the technical term). You can raise the pressure in the system while its cold to help find leaks.

I personally wouldnt drive it until you found the leak. The coolant possibly getting into the crankcase is a definate possibility. BAD
