I have a 1997 ZR2 S10 manual reg cab with the 4.3, and it's running horribly. When I start it up, it sounds fine, but as soon as I go over 5 miles per hour, it gets all choppy, won't go over 10 in first, and won't go over 45 in 5th. The engine light flashes at me. then, I pull it to the side, turn it off and then back on again, and it runs like normal. I have no clue what's going on. I replaced the MAF, spark plugs, spark plug wires, cap, rotor, and O2 sensor 1 and 2. Still runs awful. Any suggestions before I drive it into a lake?

 

I have heard of a plugged catalytic converter having symptoms like this. Do you get a code with that engine light?

I haven't heard of a catalytic converter causing that many problems but I shall look into it.
I think it would smell of eggs or make a whistling sound if its clogged. Maybe its the fact that my exhaust was chopped after the cat

 

Did you have it checked for codes?

 

Ya like twice a month. I havent scanned it since I replaced my cap and rotor but I'll check. I have unlimited access to a tech two

 

What are the codes?
