Sounds to me like your shift cable either needs to be adjusted or replaced. Look at the drivers side of the trans and you will see where it connects and if you look closely you can see that it has a bit of adjustment to loosen or tighten it. Not sure which way you will have to go or it may just be time for a new cable.

ive seen the plastic sleeve that the cable goes into crack by the trans and cause that. so instead of it pushing straight to go into park its starts bending all sideways and doesnt have the strength to push it into park

Mine has a similar problem. The column shift will go into the park position, but the transmission is really still in reverse. All the rest of the positions work. I have to put it in neutral to start it.

Luckily the lock cylinder is so worn out, I can take the key out! I just leave it in neutral with the e-brake set.

I can reach under the truck, and manually put the thing in park, but the next time I try from the shifter, it doesn't work. I figure it needs a new cable, but I've been putting it off. I really don't want to take the column all apart.

Cled that's the same issue mine had replaced the cable and no more issue. Also there's no need to take the column apart to swap the cable. Here's the how to I did when I did mine https://blazerforum.com/forum/articl...acement-73332/.

That's awesome, rex. I always assumed the cable snaked around up into the column, and a whole bunch of crap had to come out. I might just stop putting the repair off!

Yeah it's pretty easy really and took me about an hour but I was taking pics and trying to semi document it for a write up so real time you could probably do it in 30-40 minutes.
