Smog Pump Troubleshooting
Thanks in advance to all forum posters. Your posts have been extremely helpful in the past with my DIY repairs on my 2001 S10.
A check valve blew on me a while ago. Replaced it and various other melted parts, but air pump still won't run. Took air pump apart and freed up some melted impellor blades, bench tested it and it runs like a champ. Reinstalled it and changed the 30 A Maxifuse behind the battery, turned the truck on and nothing....fuse blew again and no pump. Went back under the truck and found that the vacuum switch is a bit melty as well, but shouldn't explain no power to the pump. My guess is the solenoid is shot?
Inspection is next month, else I could just live with the SES light on all the time.
Any help would be appreciated, especially anyone having experience with a bad solenoid.
cheers

Just thought I'd follow up with what seems to have worked:
Read somewhere about the 10V fuse which controls the solenoid (next to the 30V Maxifuse) and pulled it to check it. It was ok, but just for kicks I put in yet another new 30V Maxifuse in an gave it a start...wallaa...the smog pump was running after I started the engine. Must have been a bad fuse originally. The pump sounds terrible (since some of the impellors are broken, etc), but it spins, and more importantly the SES light went out after I disconnected the battery overnight. First time in a year that I have no idiot lights lit on the dash.
Still going to replace the other old check valve as a preventative measure, but maybe, MAYBE, this problem is behind me for now.
smedzzz

Glad you got it working again. Having broken vanes on the impeller might cause the whole thing to self destruct later on. You may want to keep an eye out for trucks in the junk yard that you can scavenge off of for a replacement to cut down on your cost, but if a chunk of impeller vane ends up in the check valve, you will have the problem all over again.
Thanks for the tip, swartlkk. I'll keep an eye out. With the way it sounds, it will be a miracle if this is the end of the saga. My family is outgrowing this Blazer, so I'm just trying to keep it patched up until the 'burban is purchased. Thanks again.
Recently my smog pump quit working causing exhaust to back up to it and melt the tee. I replaced the smog pump thinking that was the problem and it did the same thing. Its like the pump isnt getting power. I checked all the fuses under the hood and they all looked good but im not sure which fuse goes to the smog pump. If anyone could offer any adivice I would really appreciate it.
Your problem is likely one or more of the check valves in the lines from the exhaust manifolds.
The fuse for the solenoid on the air pump and the relay for the air pump are both located between the battery and the passenger side fender. You must remove the battery to get at them.
