Default Smoke then all is well

I had that for about 5 years, the one day I was at a traffic light with my left signal on, the signal stopped, some smoke came out of my steering column trim so I turned the signal off then back on and now it works fine. all the functions work fine as well... any ideas?

Hope you do not mind the thread title...

Smoke from the column is never a good sign. The fact that everything is working now is good, but it is not likely that it will remain that way for ever. If you are concerned about it, you should remove the multifunction switch and inspect it.

You could just try replacing the hazard switch which is the most problem prone portion of the multifunction switch. The part numbers and steps to replace it are referenced in the thread linked to above.
