I'm wondering if something might be off with the base timing in the PCM... If the starter is healthy, the only other thing that I can think of that would labor the starter would be timing issues. You stated that the truck runs good once started and warmed up which would lead me to beleive that this may be the beginnings of a starter problem. Have you tried removing and cleaning the connections at the starter? It's a pain to do, but if you have a corroded electrical connection anywhere in the loop, it could limit the power available to the starter and delay starting.

no i have not tried that... i really dont know what to do when it comes to starters. where is it located? how much of a pain are we talking about?

this may be unrelated but i did run my stereo off just the battery for about 7 hours. but this problem didnt start till about 2 weeks after. would that have anything to do with what is going on?

I doubt running your stereo would have that affect.

The starter is on teh passenger side of the engine block below the exhaust manifold. You should be able to see it from under the vehicle. The wires that need to be removed are located above the starter on the back of the solenoid. You may want to have a mechanics mirror handy to be able to see what you are looking to remove. Basically the large +12V wire is the one that you will want to make sure is clean.

I wonder if you should evaluate the fuel pump. I just replaced my fuel pump on Saturday and I am having the exact problem. This did not happen before the fuel pump was replaced. I would like to know more about the role of the fuel pump causing this kind of problem. It now takes about 5-10 seconds to start when is used to only take 1-2 seconds to start. It may not seem like 5-10 seconds is a long time to start but...it is. In my case, I know it is not the starter.

There are just 3 quick connect fuel line connections. Can something go wrong with any of these that may cause the problem. The new pump did not come with any new o-rings or anything. If one of these lines have a leak, which one? Or, can something be wrong with the pump itself (internal)

when was the last time you had a complete tune-up? that might be something to consider (stay away from bosche plugs) if possible stick with ac delco parts. pull thedistributor cap offand take a look inside, see if the rotor looks burnt. also if it has spider injection they have lines that come off of the injector and they sometimes spring a leak inside the intake manifold.

i talked to a good family friend who is also a mechanic and he said thatmy problem is"textbook" for the fuel pressure regulator. so i am replacing it tomorrow. now where is the thing located? and how hard is it going to be to replace it myself?
is this it? if it is which one of these would be the best?

You really should invest in a fuel pressure gauge before jumping in to replace the FPR.
