Default Starter spinning - fixable?

Sometimes when I turn the ignition switch, my starter just seems to spin without engaging the flywheel. After a couple of tries, it usually engages. I did some research on the forum, and it appears to be something about the "bendix" not pushing the starter gear forward. Is this something that can be repaired or cleaned, or do I need to go buy a brand new starter for $115? Thanks.

Sparky is an unknown quantity at this point

You can change just the Solenoid mounted on the starter (about $50). But you'll have to drop the starter out to change it.

Yeah, exactly what Sparky said.

If it's just clicking, then starts eventually, it's usually the solenoid. If you can hear the starter spinning, but it won't engage, it's usually the starter drive AKA Bendix. They're not hard to change if you're reasonably mechanically minded. You can get them at the parts store for around 20 bucks, maybe less. I'm not sure if Autozone or the like carries them, but a real parts store will*.

*Not ragging on Autozone by any means, but there are lots of things they don't carry.

EDIT: Disregard the above. I don't know what I was thinking when I posted that. Sparky had it right. It's probably the solenoid, and yes, they're replaceable.

Thanks for the info. It's not the solenoid because it always spins; it just doesn't engage the motor. I'll see if Napa carries the Bendix.

Ok, I just reread Sparky's post and realized I missed the additional comment. If it always spins but doesn't engage the motor, would that really be the solenoid?

You're going to have to remove the starter no matter what so I would just recommend you replace the starter and solenoid all at once. Yes, it's a bit more expensive but removing/installing the starter isn't the easiest on these vehicles.

The solenoid energizes the starter windings as well as pushes out the bendix. So yes, a solenoid issue can definitely cause the symptoms you are experiencing. You can replace only the solenoid, but I would fully inspect the starter to make sure that the nose cone bushing and the brushes are both in good condition. For the nose cone bushing, just check for play where the main shaft is fitted into the nose cone. For the brushes, you will need to pull the rear cover off of the starter motor itself (two really long screws). If the rotor where the brushes contact is black or badly scored, replace the starter.
