Sun Visor Covers
#11
No worries...I'm actually the one who inadvertently re-animated this thread last August, after 4+ years of slumber!
I bought some used visor mirror assemblies on eBay, but found the hinges had the exact same hairline cracks around them that my originals had...they were probably weeks away from complete failure. I imagine any visors that old will have the same cracks, the plastic in our Blazers seems to fatigue quite easily.
Between them all, I managed to salvage two assemblies by reinforcing the hinge areas with a "berm" of JB Weld epoxy. It worked quite well, and doesn't look bad either as the epoxy color is quite similar to the plastic. I replaced the bulbs with LEDs...should the hinges break again, they should drain the battery a lot slower than incandescent bulbs. (And hopefully not strand me at the airport again!)

They put out kind of a strange light and are not as bright or useful as the original lamps...but honestly, I always found the feature kind of marginally useful anyhow. Still, I hate it when stuff doesn't work, so I fixed it!

Those broken visor hindges are a timeless problem. Mine broke on both the passenger and driver's sides. I removed the covers and then drilled 2 small holes about 1" from each of the sides. Then drilled the same diameter hole through the back of the visor itself and secured the covers to the visor with a small cable tie. Works well and keeps the light off.

Thanks for the tips. I too had the visor break off and the mirror lights drained my battery. Ended up unhooking the wiring harness and reinstalling the visor. Problem fixed.
Anyone know how to remove and replace the clip that secures the free end of the visor to the interior roof? Mine broke off and I need a tip on how to remove and replace it once the size 15 torx screw has been removed. Thanks.

So here's the best way to fix the issue with the Vanity Lights staying on after the cover breaks off.
Takes about 5-10 min a mirror
Needed for the job

Torx T-15
a small flat head screw driver
First remove the # 8 fuse

Be sure the vanity lights aren't lit now
Open the visor and using the T-15 remove screws 1 & 2 Screw numbers are: 1-closest to door 2-interior side 3-windscreen side

Close the visor. Use one hand to hold the visor as you remove screw 3

Carefully pull the wires out

Locate the plug which should be behind the mesh

Unplug the unit. You can use the flat head to carefully open the clip and release the two ends

I recommend replacing the mesh around both ends of the plug so the unit can be reattached and found easily if you ever with to replace the lights

Carefully thread the wires back into the hole with the mesh

Clip the visor back in before screwing the unit back into place.

When screwing the visor back in start with screw 3 then 2 then 1
These pictures are from the Driver's side visor, however the same applies to the passenger side. Screw numbers for that side is: 1-closest to door 2-interior side 3-windscreen side
Hope this helps

Both cover tabs broke on my 99. I took a small metal "roll pin" about one inch long and small enough to fit in the "catch" of the housing. I epoxyed the pins to the inside of the lid and let them dry for a few days. You can finish with some touch up paint but the dry epoxy is not seen when the lids are closed. Hope this helps with your problem.
