Temp guage randomly rises then drops

yea but flushing the coolant want be bad at all but i will give you detail instruction tonight it's not hard to do at all it is a pull off put on job you just might have to disconnect a few things to get to it

A sticky thermostat that causes the tempurature to go High would give you HOT Heat. Low coolant would not pass through the heater core causing cooler heat and with no low coolant passing the Temperature sensor would show a unstable readings.
This is not totally correct. A stuck stat will cause your gauge to read high but due to a NO water flow condition the cabin will actually get cold.

Remove or Disconnect
  1. Coolant from radiator.
  2. Bolts, nuts, studs (as used).
  3. Thermostat housing outlet.
  4. Gasket.
  5. Thermostat. Clean
    Install or Connect
    1. 3 mm (1/8 inch) bead of RTV sealer GM P/N 1052289 or equivalent to the groove on the coolant outlet sealing surface.
    2. Thermostat.
    3. New gasket (if used).
    4. Thermostat housing outlet.
    5. Bolts, studs and nuts (as used). Tighten
      1. Coolant in the radiator. Inspect For leaks at the sealing surface after starting the engine.

      So i need to drain the coolant from the radiator before removing the old thermostat? I thought i could just disconnect and spill a little. It actually has to be drained first?

      Changed the thermostat and flushed the coolant and the temp is still going up and down, but mostly running too cold.

      Any other ideas?

      i dont think its even a problem at all. mine has been doing it for years and never a problem and not once has it over heated. its just one of those chevy things we wont ever understamd

      I havent done much driving at all since the install. Maybe 2-3 miles. I only put about 40 miles on this truck a week if that.

      It's not losing any coolant and it's not overheating, so maybe i'll just leave it alone.
