trans gear indicator 98 blazer

trans gear indicator 98 blazer
my buddy just bought 98 blazer. Tranny gear indicator on dash lights up with digital PND321 lights up but no indication of gear selected. We've never seen it work so dont know it its mechanical, driven by tranny, computer or steering column and our chiltons shows nothing. anyone know how this operates.
