Default Transfer Case noise

so my transfer case is making some pretty terrible growling noises in 4wd and I feel that it is going to have to be replaced. I am considering taking it in to a transmission shop to get them to look at whats going on but I know it's gonna be a pricey repair. So I'm curious how hard is it to replace a transfer case? Has anyone done it themselves? If I could find one from a wreck and just swap it in it would save me a lot of money. I've never done a repair like this before, am I in way over my head?

Have you checked the fluid level in the transfer case?

As far as swapping it out, it is not the worst thing to do, but the x-fer case is quite heavy and is awkward to support properly.
