X2. If it was grinding before, and you replaced the t-case, and it's still grinding now, I would look else where for the cause of your grinding.
As far as what case you have, if it's the three button, I think that's the NP233. The four button, I want to say NP236? Might be wrong on that. The manual one on 1st gens was an NP231.

Yup, NV233 2 speed selectable electric shift.
1st digit is how many speeds.
2nd digit is how "strong" the case is.
3rd digit: 1=part time 4WD manual shift, 3=part time 4WD electric shift, 6=Electric shift, active on demand, (Auto track).

If you are certain that's where the noise is coming from, that's where I would look. It might be worth it to pull the case apart and have a peek inside before you drop money on a new one. Maybe it could be repaired?

Possibly a stripped sprocket or a stretched chain, or both. If you end up removing the case, take it apart and check it out. They're not that difficult or expensive to rebuild. The transfer case is made by New Venture, it started out in the 70's as a joint business owned by GM & Chrysler, called "New Process". The front & rear adapters are different for each make & model, but the basic case is the same for GM, Chrysler, Dodge, & Jeep. The identification tag on the rear of the case, (on yours) should say "NV233C", indicating it's in a Chevrolet. If that same case was used in a Jeep, it would say "NV233J". Check around at the local boneyards for a 233 case, worst case scenario is you would need to transfer the adapters from your old one.
