Transmission Problems??? Overheating?

I drive a 4 door 96 Chevy Blazer and over the past year it's been pretty good to me. The check engine light has come on and off periodically but i got that checked a few times and I was told that it was nothing. It's on now, and about a week ago I was driving and from about 30 to 60 km/hr I have no umph! It's like I'm in neutral pushing on the gas. If I'm patient it does slowly make its way up to speed but it does not sound good. It's strange because once I'm above 60 ish it's ok again? I'm guessing that it's a problem with my transmission but I'm really not sure. Also, I tried putting it in second gear to drive at that speed in the city and it seems a lot better. Today I noticed that the check gages light is coming on and this is happening when my temp goes to the max which is 125. So my car is overheating! The temp goes way up but then falls way down again! I am going to get this checked out as soon as I can but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had any idea as to what is going on with my car. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks all!

Is your transmission fluid filled and smell and look good. Also when you say 125 you mean celsius Im guessing by your other metric figure. This probably happened because you were driving in second gear. This probably would have heated your transmission up higher than it should be also since 2nd is really only for slow speeds. To drive like normal in second your engine must have been near red line.

We really need to know the actual code (Pxxxx) that is being reported by the PCM. For someone to tell you "it was nothing" is a bit reckless...
Hitting 125*C (257*F) is sure has heck overheating. That is bad!

Hey thanks guys for the responses! I will take a look at the fluid today. When you say smell it and look good, what exactly am I looking for other than low fluid levels? And yes it is C...normally it's about mid range just under 100 C but lately is been going up and down from around 50 C all the way to to the max at 125 C which is when the check gages light comes on. I've been trying to get a code reader from a friend to check out why the engine light is on but I'm still waiting! Also, I don't have a mechanic anymore because I moved and I'm not really comfortable taking it to just anyone. I'm not all that informed about cars and I know that by just going anywhere that I would be an obvious target. I'm in Toronto, I don't know if anybody has any contacts to a good and honest mechanic. Thanks again!

Have you checked with some of the major auto parts chains up there to see if they can read the engine codes for you? Several of them here in the U.S.will do that.
