You can have one of the oil change places give it a 'power flush' but once you drop the pan and see all the gunk, you'll drop the pan.
On my (former) '96 it was necessary to unbolt the rear transmission mount and lift the transmission about 1"-2" so the rear of the trans pan would clear the cross member. On my '88 Jimmy, I had to remove the cross member (15mm deep wall socket needed with extensions). Putting the normal oil drain pan inside my grand kid's 4 foot diameter plastic sand box liner caught all of the splash and made for a much neater job.
The 'better' pan gasket kits (some kind of stiff rubberized material) have bolt holes that are tight on the bolts so you can start all of the bolts into the pan where they stay while you reassemble.
Be sure to get the filter sealing bushing out of the valve body. For sure don't put the new bushing on the new filter with the old bushing stuck up in the valve body or the filter won't seat high enough. Then it will interfere with the pan installation.
Both the '96 and '88 took 6 quarts to refill. And most of all, don't over tighten the pan bolts.
Good luck
