Vent solenoid and idle issues?

Monday morning, when I tried to fill my tank, the pump kept shutting off and fuel was backing up in the filler neck. I've been researching this and everything is pointing to the vent solenoid.
I am wondering, though, if this can also be causing the cranking issue that I'm having.
When I first try to crank the truck for the day, it idles extremely rough. If I let it sit for a couple of hours and then try again, it will crank and run fine.
I thought I may have picked up some bad gas so have taken care of that possibility only to find that the same symptoms remain. Could this be caused by the venting system that is causing the fueling trouble?

A failed vent solenoid should trigger a CEL (check engine light). Is the CEL on? Are there any stored codes?

There is no check engine light. I haven't taken it to get codes pulled, yet.
