Very Poor Radio Reception

I've got a '99 Blazer, all stock, that has terrible radio reception. At first I thought maybe there was a lose connection in the antenna, but removing the external antenna just makes it worse. (Which would seem to indicate there is in fact a connection.)
Should I pull the unit out of the dash to check connections, and if so, what should I be looking for? OR is there something else that could be causing this?
Basically, I can only pick up 3 or 4 FM stations within about a 45 mile radius. Even the local stations occasionally have static or just start to fade a little.

some factory radios just lose reception for some reason. you could pull the radio out and make sure that the antenna isnt grounding out to something. you can also pick up an FM booster at most parts stores for about 15 bucks or so.
