So I have a 2001 RWD 4dr and it has an open differential. I would like to swap it out for a limited slip differential. What I wanna know is if someone can point me in the right direction as to my otpions for achiving that. Ive search the threads but havent found this information, if it's been covered please post a link.

Check out summitracing.com and 4wheelparts.com, they have some limited slips for your axle. But after you find one you might want to shop around for a better price, because they're a little expensive. I have an Eaton Detroit Tru-Trac Limited slip in my rear axle and it works great!!! I bought the axle from a guy with a ZR2 pickup and he had the limited slip already installed.

 

Actually I am more interested in replacing the axle with one with limited slip or some type of positrac. There is a lotta turning play. like an inch, in the rear end + I want some fort of locking so I would like to know how to tell what rear axle from what years is compatible with by 2001 blaze 4dr ls rwd thats has limited slip. Thanks for the sites though, good stuff there.

 

A Bravada might have one stock or you could pull the rear axle from a ZR2, but the axle is longer so your rear tires will stick out further. I think years 95-05 are a direct bolt up fit, but I'm not 100% sure. You can check for the LS by looking in the glove box for the G80 code. I've read online that some people think the G80 is trash but who knows..... Maybe you can find one off craigslist with a good aftermarket LS or positrac.

You may want to consider a Powertrax locker. The unit simply installs in your stock differential in place of your spider gears. No need to disturb the ring and pinion. And they're strong. I've installed 3 of these. I've had 1 in my '86 Surburban for 4 1/2 years. I put 1 in a '65 Chevy pick-up that my son had that was powered by a warmed over 350 that I built. I also put 1 in a V-8 powered '73 Vega GT with a Monza rear end that I used to have. Check it out:

1) Look in your glove-box for your gear ratio; GU1, GU2, GU3, GU4, GU5, GU6. Verify you do NOT have G80 locker code.

2) Go to Salvage - Look for Blazer, Jimmy, S10, S15, Bravdos 1995 - 2001 (Please someone correct me if the year goes later than this). Look for one with same gear ratio as your, but which also lists G80. Pull that rear-end.

3) G80 locker is not "limited slip" rather a "situational locker". While it has clutches, they will either be "open" or "locked" and should never "slip" while under a heavy load, therefore no "friction modifier additive" is needed.

 

If you do find one from a salvage yard just remember it could be shot to s***, so you'll have to go back and get it exchanged. Your gear ratio should be GU6 3.42, but you should double check to make sure. Good Luck!!!
