Default What is this?

When changing my rear shocks on my 01 LT Blazer 4wd I saw this wire. It was hanging loose and when I grabbed it to inspect it, the wire was very corroded and a section cracked off. The picture is taken from under the vehicle in the area where the spare tire sits, looking up towards the gas fill (you can see the spare tire cable in the pic). Can anyone tell me what this is? And if so, where does it run to and from and do I need to replace it asap?

It's a ground wire for the fuel filler neck. It has an eyelet terminal on each end. It runs from the neck to the frame. It grounds static electricity when you refuel. Without the wire, the static electricity will search for a path to ground with the least resistance... usually down the neck and into the fuel, (which does conduct electricity) then finds ground on the surface of the tank... inside The possibility for disaster is there, that's why the wire is there. Might be a good idea to repair it.

That's the information I'm looking for! What gauge wire do you recommend I use? Any idea of the length of the wire? I'd love to have it made up before I go under to replace it..

10 gauge would be fine. As for length, the original wire was maybe 18". The attaching surfaces need to be bare metal, you can spray paint them after making the connection to keep rust to a minimum.
