Default What years?

What year engines will drop into a '96 4X4 Blazer? I fixed everything up on my truck and yesterday I started getting noise out of the engine. Bummer! In the space of 5 miles, it got a lot louder. It's coming out of the bottom of the oil pan in the front. I'm thinking either a timing chain coming apart or a rod bearing going.

I'm of two minds about fixing this thing. I've spent a bunch of money on it the last few months and now this. Drives great. I've even changed it over to the later (2002) style injection system.

I believe its up to 98 without any changes.Search the forums or google to make sure though.People have used later model engines but with minor mods.

1996 would be the easiest. Next option would be 1997, or 1998, and you'll most likely need the PCM and wire harness from it. 1999 has secondary air, so not a good choice. The "X" engine will work but, you'll need to use the PCM and wire harness from it, and rewire some stuff, ("X" engine has the injector upgrade, no secondary air, and does not have an EGR valve).

I just don't want the hassle of converting it. I'm not even sure I want the trouble of swapping the engine. For power I've got a '75 Camaro with a really nasty V-8 in it. Between that and the 4.11 positrac rear end, I have to be careful with the throttle or I leave twin black marks on the drive. The lady friend is griping about the time I spend on the Camaro and now I have a driveway queen with the Blazer.

Just thinking.... 96 & 97 are nearly identical. Both of them have 4 oxygen sensors. 98 and newer only has 3 so you'd definitely need the 98 PCM and wire harness.

96 & 97 are the only two years that have 4 oxygen sensors. B1S2 was eliminated on 98 and newer.
